London, 22 August (Kiran News). Britain on Thursday imposed sanctions on Iranian oil trader Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani and four companies, accusing them of being part of a network that supports Tehran’s foreign activities. This also includes spreading instability in Ukraine and Israel.
The British Foreign Ministry said that the sanctions on Shamkhani include asset freezes and travel restrictions, while companies in the shipping, petrochemical, and financial sectors will face asset freezes.
Hamish Falconer, Britain’s Minister for Middle East Affairs, said, “Income from Iran’s commercial networks and affiliated organisations helps carry out destabilising activities, supports regional proxies and partners, and enables state-sponsored threats in Britain.”
The Iranian embassy rejected these sanctions, calling them a “unilateral and illegal step” and described the allegations as “baseless.”
Shamkhani, who is the son of the advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, could not be reached for comment. The United States had imposed sanctions on Shamkhani last month, alleging that he controls a vast network managing container ships and tankers involved in the global sale of Iranian and Russian oil and other goods.
The European Union had also blacklisted Shamkhani in July. The companies targeted by Britain are accused of operating under Shamkhani’s instructions.
Last month, British MPs warned that Iran has become an increasing and multidimensional threat to Britain. According to the report, this threat ranges from physical attacks, conspiracies targeting dissidents and the Jewish community, espionage, cyber attacks, and efforts to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran has dismissed all these allegations as “political and hostile.”
