New Delhi, February 11: The first meeting of the BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas under India’s presidency concluded after two days of discussions. The meeting outlined the agenda for upcoming gatherings, focusing on Prime Minister Modi’s “people-centric” and “humanity-first” priorities.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting took place on February 9-10, 2026, in New Delhi, chaired by India’s BRICS Sherpa and Secretary for Economic Relations, Sudhakar Dalela. He was accompanied by Shambhu L. Hakki, the Sous Sherpa and Joint Secretary for Multilateral Economic Relations.
Sherpas and senior officials from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE participated in the meeting. On February 10, 2026, the BRICS Sherpas and country representatives met with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
During the meeting, Minister Jaishankar launched the theme, logo, and website for BRICS 2026. India outlined its priorities for the presidency under the theme of “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Building for Sustainable Development.”
Various ministries and departments of the Indian government presented priorities and proposed activities under different BRICS objectives, including health, agriculture, labor and employment, disaster risk reduction, environment, climate change, energy, innovation, ICT, security, counter-terrorism, and economic and financial cooperation.
Additionally, discussions were held on institutional development within BRICS and strengthening economic and political cooperation among emerging economies. Presentations were made on sports collaboration, youth connectivity, cultural cooperation, the BRICS Academic Forum, the BRICS Think Tank Council, the BRICS Civil Forum, as well as the BRICS Business Council and BRICS Women’s Business Alliance.
During the two days, delegates visited the National Handicrafts Museum, the Handicrafts Academy, and the Akshardham Temple. The BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas will continue to meet regularly throughout the year to maintain alignment on theme-based areas.
The term “Sherpa” refers to representatives speaking on behalf of the heads of state from member countries, similar to how Sherpas guide climbers on high Himalayan paths. India officially assumed the presidency of the 18th BRICS in 2026 on January 13.
