BrahMos Missile Propels India as a Major Defense Exporter

New Delhi, May 18: India is rapidly solidifying its position among the world’s leading defense exporters, with the BrahMos missile emerging as a significant symbol of the nation’s growing military strength. According to a report, India’s increasing expertise in missile manufacturing and its expanding reach to Global South countries have reinforced its ‘defense self-reliance.’ This development is continuously enhancing India’s standing on the global stage.

The report from ‘India Narrative’ states that defense exports have become a vital tool in India’s foreign policy. As India establishes itself as a major global power, it is also strengthening its diplomatic influence and international partnerships.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed confidence that India’s defense exports will reach ₹50,000 crore by 2030. As India’s defense market expands, the country is striving to enhance its influence in areas aligned with its strategic and geopolitical thinking. Notably, the Global South is becoming an essential part of India’s strategic policy.

The report highlights that the export of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is a significant game-changer in this context. Relations with Southeast Asian countries are rapidly evolving, and this region is emerging as a new defense market for India.

Developed in collaboration with Russia, the BrahMos missile has gained global attention due to its high speed, precision targeting capabilities, and versatile technology. It can be launched from land, sea, air, and submarines. With speeds ranging from Mach 2.8 to Mach 3, it is considered much faster than many conventional cruise missiles. It is capable of delivering precise strikes over distances exceeding 400 kilometers.

The report notes that countries in the South China Sea region, such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, are working to enhance their security and defense capabilities. In light of China’s aggressive naval posture and regional claims, these nations aim to strengthen their ‘Anti-Access/Area Denial’ (A2/AD) capabilities, with BrahMos playing a crucial role.

Indonesia has also been identified as a potential buyer of the BrahMos missile. Discussions regarding a BrahMos deal with Vietnam are ongoing, having been addressed during Vietnamese President To Lam’s visit to India in May.

The Philippines became the first country to purchase the BrahMos missile in 2024, with India delivering a second batch in April 2025.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is on a tour of Vietnam and South Korea. He stated that his focus will be on enhancing strategic military cooperation, strengthening defense industry partnerships, and promoting maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region to maintain peace and stability.
