Dhaka, February 17: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is poised to return to power in the South Asian nation after nearly two decades. On Tuesday, newly elected BNP lawmakers will take their oaths, marking the appointment of a new Prime Minister for Bangladesh.

According to local media reports, the oath-taking ceremony for the cabinet will take place at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building. Typically, such events are held at the Presidential Palace, but today’s ceremony is being conducted at South Plaza to honor those who lost their lives during the violent protests in July 2024.

This event is expected to be a significant political moment for Bangladesh. All 297 newly elected lawmakers will be sworn in at 10:00 AM by Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin in the Parliament’s oath room. Following this, they will join the Constitutional Reform Council, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.

BNP President Tarique Rahman has achieved a remarkable victory in the national parliamentary elections, paving the way for the formation of a new government. Approximately 1,200 prominent figures from Bangladesh and abroad are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building in Dhaka, scheduled for 4:00 PM on Tuesday.

Several notable international personalities are anticipated to be present, including Bhutan’s Prime Minister Shering Tobgay, Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Pakistan‘s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal. Additionally, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Balendra Sharma, Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, the UK’s Deputy Secretary for Indo-Pacific Seema Malhotra, and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu may also attend the ceremony.

It is noteworthy that Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary election took place on February 12, with the Election Commission announcing the winners of 297 seats on the night of February 13. Voting occurred in 299 out of 300 constituencies for this election. The Election Commission has declared informal results for 297 electoral areas; however, notifications for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 have yet to be issued following directives from the High Court.

So far, the declared results indicate that the BNP has won 209 out of 297 seats, with their candidates leading in two constituencies, Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4, where results are pending. Their allies have claimed three seats.
