BJP Secures Major Victory in Assam Elections, Major Upset for Congress Leaders

Guwahati, May 5: In the Assam Assembly elections, several prominent figures emerged as major winners and losers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and several BJP leaders achieved remarkable victories, while senior Congress leaders and opposition candidates faced significant defeats in a largely one-sided contest.

Among the biggest winners, CM Sarma retained his Jalukbari seat with a margin of 89,434 votes, solidifying his stronghold in the state.

Senior BJP leaders such as Pradyut Bordoloi (Dispur), Vijay Gupta (Guwahati Central), and Diplu Ranjan Sarmah (New Guwahati) also secured solid wins. Similarly, Pijush Hazarika (Jagiroad), Jayanta Malla Barua (Nalbari), and Dr. Ranoj Pegu (Dhemaji) were among other key BJP figures who triumphed.

Further strengthening the party’s performance, Bhuban Pegoo (Jonai), Manab Deka (Lakhimpur), and Bhupen Bora (Bihpuria) were also counted among the top winners, highlighting widespread support for the BJP across various regions.

Leaders from allied parties, including AGP’s Tapan Das (Dhimoria), contributed to the NDA’s strong showing. Conversely, the elections witnessed several high-profile defeats.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi lost by over 23,000 votes in Jorhat, while senior leader Debabrata Saikia faced defeat in Nazira.

Regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leaders Lurin Jyoti Gogoi (Khowang) and Rajen Gohain (Barhampur) also failed to make a significant impact in the elections. Other notable losers included Congress candidate Meera Borthakur, who lost in Dispur, while independent candidate Jayanta Das and AJP’s Kanki Chaudhary were defeated in Guwahati Central.

Congress leaders Diganta Barman (Barkhetri) and Nandita Das (Hajo-Sualkuchi) were also among those who lost their seats.

Overall, the results showcased a decisive mandate in favor of the BJP, which won 82 out of the 126 assembly seats. Congress lagged behind with 19 seats, while regional parties like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats each.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal managed to win two seats each, while the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) opened its account with one seat.

With this impressive victory, the BJP is set to form the government in Assam for the third consecutive time, further solidifying its dominance in the northeastern state and delivering a significant blow to the opposition.
