Israeli President Honors Captain Smita Machhar for Heroic Actions

Tel Aviv, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Israeli President Isaac Herzog sent a heartfelt letter to Indian Captain Smita Machhar on October 10, expressing gratitude for her extraordinary bravery. On September 30, 2026, Captain Machhar safely landed a FlyDubai flight, averting a major disaster for the passengers on board.

In his letter, President Herzog wished her a swift and complete recovery and extended an invitation for her to visit Jerusalem once she is fully healed. Captain Machhar received this letter while recovering in the hospital.

Earlier this week, during a ceremony honoring six Israeli citizens for their valor, President Herzog announced his intention to present Captain Machhar with a presidential award after her recovery. He praised her composure in the face of grave danger, stating, “Your ability to rise above pain, confront immediate threats to your life, and make sound decisions reflects your strong character and the great courage within you.”

The President also highlighted the historical ties between India and Israel, recalling the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers over a century ago in the Holy Land. He noted, “Your bravery places you among the distinguished ranks of Indian soldiers who risked their lives over 100 years ago to liberate the cities of the Holy Land, becoming an eternal part of Israel’s history. You, Captain Machhar, will now be a cherished part of our people’s history, further strengthening the bond between the Republic of India and Israel.”

In closing, President Herzog expressed confidence in her recovery, stating, “As you begin your journey to recovery, I know you are in the best hands of our dear friends and partners in the United Arab Emirates. We all sincerely pray for your full and speedy recovery, and I eagerly look forward to welcoming you in Jerusalem to express our nation’s gratitude and love.”
