Yamunanagar, June 17: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma has emphasized the need for a Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists to address issues related to illegal immigration, political dynamics in West Bengal, and the NEET-UG examination. She asserted that the lack of comprehensive updates to the voter lists over the years has led to the inclusion of numerous illegitimate names, benefiting certain political parties in various states. Additionally, she expressed concerns about the alleged misuse of the Telegram platform.
Sharma pointed out that there has not been a significant review of the voter lists since 2002. During this period, the country’s population has changed, many individuals have passed away, others have relocated, and new voters have emerged. However, the verification of voter lists has not kept pace. She stressed that it is crucial to update these lists to ensure the identification of genuine and eligible voters. According to her, extensive verification is being conducted with the assistance of BJP’s booth-level agents (BLA) and booth-level officers (BLO).
The Rajya Sabha MP accused West Bengal of including a large number of illegal immigrants in the voter lists over the years, which has influenced the state’s political landscape. She claimed that names of individuals from Bangladesh have been added to the voter lists, granting them various documents and providing political advantages to the ruling party. Sharma stated that such activities not only disrupt the electoral process but also pose a serious challenge to national security. She noted that actions are being taken to identify these cases, and the process of removing individuals who have been improperly included in the voter lists is underway.
Sharma mentioned that only those with illegally obtained documents or voter IDs should be concerned about the Special Intensive Review. She reassured that genuine Indian citizens should not face any issues. During the verification process, necessary information related to the voter and their family is being collected to ensure that the individuals listed are indeed eligible voters. She affirmed that those who are legitimate voters will remain on the list without any hassle.
The MP added that if an individual resides in a different location, verification can still be conducted according to the established procedures. She stated that this process aims to enhance the transparency and reliability of the voter lists. Sharma alleged that some individuals residing illegally in India are exploiting fake documents to avail government benefits and schemes. She emphasized that these individuals are using Aadhaar cards and other identification documents to access public resources. The government’s goal, according to her, is to ensure that the benefits of government schemes and resources reach only eligible Indian citizens. Identifying illegal residents and taking action against them is essential for national security and the fair distribution of resources.
Addressing controversies related to the NEET-UG examination and the role of the Telegram platform, Sharma noted that Telegram has been widely used for disseminating information related to the exam. She claimed that due to Telegram’s technical structure, tracking information shared on the platform is relatively difficult, leading many to misuse it for illicit activities. Sharma revealed that there have been reports of exam-related materials and questions being circulated via Telegram.
