TMC Requests Meeting with President and Governor Over Law and Order Issues in West Bengal

Kolkata, September 3: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has requested a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and Governor R.N. Ravi to discuss the law and order situation in West Bengal. The party sent letters to both constitutional authorities on Thursday, seeking an appointment.

A senior TMC leader stated that the letters addressed to the President and Governor urge a delegation meeting to present information regarding alleged attacks on party leaders, workers, and party offices in the state.

According to the TMC leader, once an appointment is secured, the delegation will discuss the law and order situation and the reported attacks on party members. The party claims that such incidents have been on the rise since the BJP-led government and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari took office after the assembly elections this year.

The decision to seek a meeting with the President and Governor followed a social media post by TMC National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday. He shared a video of an alleged attack by BJP workers at his office located on Camac Street in central Kolkata.

Shortly after, Banerjee posted again, alleging that during the past month, two of his offices had been vandalized and looted. One office is in Amtala, part of the Diamond Harbour constituency, while the other is on Camac Street.

Banerjee accused the police and individuals associated with the BJP of disregarding the law and the judiciary. He stated that the situation has escalated beyond a mere law and order issue, representing an open challenge to the rule of law.

He also questioned the judiciary’s role, asking whether it would intervene to uphold the rule of law, protect constitutional rights, and ensure that the power of the Constitution in West Bengal does not become merely a formality. However, as of the time of this report, there has been no response from TMC chief and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the incident at the Camac Street office.

The office on Camac Street has been embroiled in controversy in recent days. An FIR was filed last week concerning a dispute over the removal of an alleged illegal hoarding from the office building’s roof.

In the past two days, Kolkata police have questioned Abhishek Banerjee, his personal assistant Sumit Roy, and TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien regarding this matter.
