Mumbai, September 3: Abu Asim Azmi, the Maharashtra state president of the Samajwadi Party, has raised several questions regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. He accused the process of negligence, stating that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are unable to dedicate sufficient time to their duties. Azmi urged voters whose names are not yet registered to seek assistance from political parties, social organizations, or NGOs to complete the necessary procedures promptly.
Azmi pointed out that BLOs were supposed to visit each household three times to ensure the process was completed, but this did not happen. Many BLOs were balancing their duties with other government responsibilities, which hindered the SIR process. He noted that Booth Level Agents (BLAs) were also supposed to be appointed alongside the BLOs, with over 300 BLAs needed in his area alone. For such a critical task, personnel fully dedicated to the job should have been appointed. Azmi called on the government to take the SIR seriously and provide BLOs with adequate time to complete the verification process. He emphasized that fatigue and other duties are preventing staff from performing their tasks effectively.
Warning the public, Azmi stated that those whose names are not yet included in the SIR process should not be negligent. He appealed to political party offices, NGOs, and social activists to assist in completing the process. He claimed that individuals may face questions about their citizenship if their names are removed from the list. The government must ensure that genuine voters are not excluded due to errors or negligence.
Regarding allegations of numerous voter names being removed in Mumbai, Azmi mentioned that various factors could be at play. Some individuals may have had their names registered in both their villages and Mumbai, leading to potential removals. However, he alleged that those in power might attempt to protect their supporters’ names while removing those of opposition voters. Such possibilities cannot be dismissed, and fairness and transparency in the process are essential.
On the appointment of a new CEO for the Ram Mandir Trust, Azmi stated that significant decisions related to the temple have historically been the responsibility of the Prime Minister and Chief Minister. He accused political entities of exploiting the Ram Mandir issue during elections. Referring to alleged misappropriation of donations at the temple, he insisted that public scrutiny should remain regardless of who the new CEO is. If any irregularities or theft occurred in donations, accountability must be established.
Regarding the Disha Salian case being handed over to the CBI, Azmi noted that it is an old case that has already been discussed in the Assembly. He welcomed the family’s request for a CBI investigation, asserting that only through an investigation can the true situation be clarified. He stated that it is inappropriate to accuse anyone without an investigation. On allegations linking Disha Salian’s case to the Sushant Singh Rajput case, he remarked that it would be premature to comment until the CBI report is released.
Azmi also targeted BJP leader Kirit Somaiya for suggesting protests outside a mosque. He accused Somaiya of attempting to showcase his alignment with BJP and RSS issues. Additionally, he criticized Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane for making communal statements while holding a constitutional position, claiming that the government has failed to intervene. Azmi labeled this as dirty politics, asserting that political parties should operate in accordance with constitutional and democratic values rather than religious and communal issues.
