Kolkata, May 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated the apparent failure of the Trinamool Congress’s Diamond Harbour model on Sunday. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda was leading after 19 rounds of vote counting in the Falta assembly seat. Officials reported that a total of 21 rounds of counting were scheduled, with Panda receiving 137,473 votes after the 19th round.
The party attributed this trend to the growing support for the BJP in West Bengal, driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the political influence of Suvendu Adhikari.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari shared a video on X, showing jubilant supporters celebrating, waving party flags, and chanting slogans. In the counting trends, Panda was ahead of CPI(M) candidate Shambhu Nath Kurmi, Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq Molla, and Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan.
Bhandari stated in his post that the Diamond Harbour model has failed, and the pride of the ‘nephews’ has been shattered. Inspired by Suvendu Da’s leadership and PM Modi’s vision, the people of Bengal have chosen the BJP in Falta.
Re-voting took place on May 21 for the Falta assembly seat in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Abhishek Banerjee. Reports indicated that a significant number of voters participated in the voting, which was conducted under tight security.
Since counting began at 8 AM on Sunday, the trend remained consistent. Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan remained in fourth place, securing only 5,914 votes.
The trends observed on Sunday starkly contrast with previous results in Falta, whether from the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections or the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In the 2021 assembly elections, Trinamool Congress’s Shankar Kumar Naskar won Falta by a margin of 41,000 votes. Falta is one of seven assembly segments in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.
Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress general secretary and nephew of Mamata Banerjee, has represented the Diamond Harbour seat three times. Recently, TMC candidate Jahangir Khan declined to contest from this seat, making the path to victory much easier for the BJP.
