Nainital, July 28: Nestled in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, the Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is a revered site known for its spiritual significance, serene atmosphere, and breathtaking natural beauty. Ahead of the Sawan month, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami praised the temple’s grandeur on his social media platforms.
The Chief Minister shared a video of the temple on ‘X’, stating, “The Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple, located in Nainital district, is a prominent religious site dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is famous for its faith, spiritual tranquility, and natural beauty. Surrounded by lush greenery and mountains, this sacred place attracts both devotees and tourists. If you’re visiting Nainital district, make sure to visit the Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple. The peaceful environment and stunning natural views will make your trip unforgettable.”
Situated at an altitude of approximately 2,312 meters, the temple is believed to have been established by the Pandavas during their period of exile. According to tradition, during their 12 years in the forest, the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva here, seeking liberation from their life’s hardships. Today, many devotees and tourists visit this sacred temple to pay their respects.
Inside the temple, statues of Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma can be found, along with a Shiva Lingam made of white marble, accompanied by a copper yoni. Due to its religious significance and natural beauty, Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the major tourist attractions in Uttarakhand.
It is believed that seeing Lord Shiva here grants devotees liberation or moksha, which is why the place is named ‘Mukteshwar.’ Visitors must navigate stone-cut steps to reach the temple, adding to the excitement of the journey. An ancient bell hangs in the temple complex, which devotees ring to make their wishes.
