Fazilka, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal declared the BJP’s “Drug-Free Punjab Campaign” a social reform initiative during a public meeting in Fazilka on Sunday. He emphasized that the goal is to protect future generations from substance abuse and guide Punjab toward development.
Before flagging off the third leg of the campaign from the old vegetable market, Meghwal paid tribute at the Asafwala Martyrs Memorial, honoring soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. He was accompanied by BJP National General Secretary Satish Punia, Punjab BJP President Keval Singh Dhillon, former state president Sunil Jakhar, and former minister Surjit Kumar Jiyani.
In his address, Meghwal responded to critics who view the campaign as politically motivated. He insisted it is not a political movement but rather a genuine effort for social improvement. He highlighted that the BJP, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actively promotes social initiatives alongside government programs, citing campaigns like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” and “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”
Discussing the harmful effects of drugs, Meghwal referenced the teachings of Guru Amar Das from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, urging people to avoid substances that impair judgment. He also noted the importance of “Naam Simran” from Guru Nanak Dev’s teachings, stating that true spiritual remembrance can only occur when one’s discernment is intact.
The minister even sang a hymn by Guru Nanak Dev, which was well-received by the audience. He reiterated that raising awareness about the dangers of substance abuse is a message echoed by Sikh Gurus, Bhagat Kabir Das, and Guru Ravidas.
Meghwal stressed that linking the drug-free campaign to social and spiritual awareness is crucial for motivating individuals to protect themselves from the adverse effects of drugs. He affirmed that this is the essence of the BJP’s initiative.
Punjab BJP President Dhillon remarked that those who contributed to the drug problem are now fearful of the BJP’s campaign, suggesting it has put the Chief Minister on the defensive. He referenced recent incidents in Sangrur involving Mohanjit Sheron and Gulzar Singh, alleging that the government is suppressing voices against drug abuse.
Dhillon pointed out the desperation of citizens, noting that residents in Faridkot are posting signs indicating their homes are for sale due to the drug crisis. He challenged the BJP’s ability to eliminate drugs in Punjab, citing successes in tackling gangsterism in Uttar Pradesh and violence in Kashmir post-Article 370 removal.
Former Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar expressed concern over the rising death toll from drug abuse, highlighting that now even those speaking out against it face threats. He criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, stating that the 79,000 arrests made under his leadership are not a testament to bravery but rather evidence of the youth being pushed into a drug crisis.
