Chennai, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has taken significant action against the sale of non-hallmarked gold jewelry, seizing approximately 803.99 grams during a recent operation in Chennai. This information was released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on September 10, 2026.
On September 1, 2026, BIS officials conducted an enforcement search at a jewelry store in Ambattur, Chennai. The seizure was made under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, after discovering non-hallmarked gold jewelry displayed for commercial sale.
The confiscated items included 175 mangalsutras weighing a total of 671.50 grams, 12 bangles for children weighing 25.02 grams, 40 earrings totaling 86.14 grams, and 10 pendants weighing 21.33 grams.
The BIS enforcement team found that various designs and categories of jewelry were being offered for sale without the required hallmarks. These items were seized for further investigation and legal action in accordance with the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
This operation was carried out with the assistance of local police, involving BIS Chennai branch officials and support staff.
S.D. Dayanand, head of the BIS Chennai branch, emphasized that BIS regularly monitors the market and conducts enforcement activities to ensure compliance with mandatory certification and hallmarking requirements. He noted that such enforcement actions are crucial to prevent the sale of substandard products, curb the misuse of BIS marks and hallmarks, and maintain consumer trust in the certification and hallmarking system.
According to BIS, hallmarking serves as an official indicator of the purity or quality of precious metal items. Under the current hallmarking system, gold jewelry must display the BIS logo, purity, and a six-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. Consumers can verify the HUID of hallmarked jewelry using the BIS Care app.
