New Delhi, August 27: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed nine teams in sensitive areas of Bihar following severe flooding in Nepal. NDRF IG Narendra Singh Bundela stated that these teams are on standby to provide assistance as needed.
In an interview with a news agency, Bundela highlighted that the Gandak River poses a risk to parts of both Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. He noted, “The Gandak River affects regions in both states. Areas in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, and districts in Bihar through which the river flows, ultimately merging into the Ganges, may be impacted. The state government is monitoring the situation closely, and NDRF teams are stationed there.”
Bundela explained that during the monsoon season, a central meeting is held to plan the deployment of NDRF teams across states. Due to the recent events, surveillance and deployment have been intensified.
Given the current situation, several areas in Bihar are at risk of flooding, prompting the deployment of a total of nine teams, with two specifically assigned to the Gandak River region.
He also mentioned that the Indian government has provided extensive humanitarian aid and disaster relief to Nepal. Should the affected country request assistance, the NDRF is prepared to help.
Bundela added that the deployment has been increased following unprecedented flooding in China and Nepal. He stated, “After the Indian government received information about the flooding, the state government coordinated with the Central Water Commission to assess the flood risk in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.”
On Wednesday, the Chief Minister of Bihar personally reviewed the situation, leading to the request for two additional NDRF teams, which have since been deployed to two locations.
Recent official reports indicate that the death toll from the sudden and severe flooding of Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River has reached 177.
