New Delhi, August 27: The Nepal Embassy in New Delhi has expressed gratitude to the Indian government and its citizens for their swift humanitarian assistance following the devastating floods that struck Nepal on August 26. The embassy stated that India’s solidarity and support have provided strength to Nepal during this challenging time.
As of Thursday morning, the floods have claimed the lives of 177 individuals, with their bodies recovered from the banks of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. The police reported that these bodies were found in several districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi (East), and Nawalparasi (West).
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, the embassy expressed heartfelt thanks to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. They have conveyed their condolences, prayers, and solidarity with the Nepalese government and its people.
The embassy reported that the flash floods on August 26, 2026, caused significant destruction. Many individuals were forced to evacuate their homes, and critical infrastructure, including settlements, roads, and bridges, suffered extensive damage. Several people remain missing, and a full assessment of the losses is still underway.
The embassy extends its deepest condolences to the grieving families. They pray for the swift recovery of the injured and hope that those still missing will be found safe and soon.
The Nepalese government has activated the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, local administration, health institutions, and all agencies related to disaster relief. Search, rescue, and relief operations are ongoing, utilizing both aerial and ground efforts.
The immediate priorities of the government include saving lives, locating and safely extracting missing and stranded individuals, including foreign nationals, providing medical care to the injured, arranging food, safe drinking water, and temporary shelter for affected communities, restoring communication routes, and ensuring the safety of children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
The embassy is also grateful for the messages of sympathy and support received from Indian central ministers, governors, chief ministers, members of parliament, political leaders, and friendly citizens of India.
