Patna, February 19: The Bihar Assembly elections from last year are back in the spotlight. The Patna High Court has issued notices to 42 legislators, including several ministers, regarding discrepancies in their election affidavits.
The legislators who received notices must respond within the timeframe set by the High Court. The notices were prompted by petitions filed by candidates who lost in the assembly elections, challenging the winning legislators in the Patna High Court.
Following the hearings, the High Court issued the notices. The petitions allege that concealing information in the affidavits is a serious issue that raises questions about the transparency of the electoral process. Various petitioners claim that essential information was either omitted or certain sections were left blank in the affidavits.
The petitions also state that the electoral process’s rules were not adhered to, misleading the public. Advocate Shashibhushan Mangalam, representing the Patna High Court, noted that the case revolves around providing incorrect information in the affidavits during the nomination process.
The petitions assert that facts were concealed, violating the Supreme Court’s directives. Among the complainants are several defeated candidates and voters. After reviewing the case, the High Court issued notices to the 42 legislators.
In the Bihar Assembly elections, the NDA secured a significant victory, with the RJD winning only 25 seats and the Congress claiming just six. The BJP and JD(U) benefited the most, with the BJP winning 89 seats and JD(U) securing 85. Chirag Paswan’s LJP (Ram Vilas) had 19 candidates declared victorious, while Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha won five seats, and Upendra Kushwaha’s National Lok Morcha claimed four seats.
