New Delhi, June 23: India’s leading fencer, Bhavani Devi, has officially apologized for her behavior during the team event at the 2026 Asian Fencing Championship held in New Delhi. She has also appealed for a reconsideration of the suspension imposed after the incident.
In a press release from the Fencing Association of India (FAI), Bhavani expressed regret following the issuance of a black card during the championship, which resulted in a two-month suspension under relevant disciplinary rules.
The FAI stated that the Olympian has offered an unconditional apology and reaffirmed her respect for the sport’s rules, officials, and values.
The association has submitted a request to the International Fencing Federation (FIE) to reconsider the suspension, either reducing or lifting it.
Bhavani’s appeal highlights her exemplary disciplinary record throughout her international career, noting that she has never been involved in any prior disciplinary incidents.
The FAI also mentioned that the World Championship is scheduled for next month, and a prolonged suspension could prevent one of India’s most talented athletes from competing.
According to reports, the incident arose when Bhavani disagreed with a referee’s decision, leading her to remove her mask.
Currently, no ban is in effect, and discussions have taken place between the FAI and the sport’s international governing body. It has been requested that the suspension be limited to this specific event. The final decision will need to be respected by all parties involved, based on the FIE’s ruling.
Bhavani Devi is a prominent figure in Indian fencing and represents the country on the global stage. All eyes are on the upcoming decision regarding her suspension.
