New Delhi, July 22: The prestigious Ashes rivalry between England and Australia is set to enter a new chapter in 2027. For the first time, both teams will face off in the ‘Mixed Disability Ashes,’ marking a significant step in the ongoing development of disability cricket. This initiative aims to provide more international opportunities for disabled players and promote equal participation in the sport.
The Australian men’s mixed disability team will tour England for a T20 series, with the first match being part of England’s 2027 Ashes summer. While the schedule and venues have yet to be announced, this series will ensure that England’s men’s, women’s, and mixed disability teams participate in Ashes matches during the same season.
This announcement reflects the rapidly growing popularity and development of mixed disability cricket, which has gained recognition through bilateral series in recent years. England has already played against India in this format and is set to host another series this summer. Australia will soon join this expanding international calendar.
Ian Martin, head of disability cricket, stated, “Launching the Ashes signifies the next step for mixed disability cricket. It represents a meaningful progression for the sport. All cricket fans understand the significance of the Ashes series. For many, the England vs. Australia match is the pinnacle of the game. I am thrilled that our men’s mixed disability team will have the opportunity to compete in such a series. We have had a fantastic series against India, another series is scheduled for this summer, and we aim to advance this format. I eagerly await welcoming Australia to the UK next summer for my first Mixed Disability Ashes series.”
James Allsop, head of cricket at Cricket Australia, believes this new competition is another important milestone in the journey towards inclusivity in the sport. He remarked, “The Mixed Disability Ashes Series will provide Australian cricketers with disabilities the chance to add a new chapter alongside the men’s, women’s, and blind Ashes series, competing in one of the sport’s greatest rivalries.”
