New Delhi, July 22: The Big Bash League (BBL) team Sydney Sixers has announced the appointment of Matthew Mott as the new head coach of its men’s team. Mott has signed a two-year contract and will replace James Hopes.
Hopes took over the role after Greg Shipperd’s departure but resigned last month to take on a dual coaching role with Queensland and Brisbane Heat. The 52-year-old Mott has served as the team’s assistant coach for the past two seasons. Last summer, he also took charge of the Sixers’ women’s team, leading them to the Challenger match in the Women’s Big Bash League. The Sydney Sixers are expected to announce the new head coach for the women’s team by the end of this week.
This appointment marks a new chapter in Matthew Mott’s long and successful coaching career. With over 20 years in cricket coaching, Mott served as the head coach of England’s men’s limited-overs team from 2022 to 2024. Under his guidance, the England team, captained by Jos Buttler, won the T20 World Cup in 2022. Prior to that, Mott was the head coach of the Australian women’s team from 2015 to 2022, during which the team achieved remarkable success, winning two T20 World Cups, the 2022 ODI World Cup, and four Ashes series. Additionally, his coaching led Australia to a world record of 26 consecutive ODI victories.
Mott expressed his excitement about continuing his long association with the Sydney Sixers in a new role. He stated, “I have been part of the Sixers family for a long time, so the opportunity to take on the head coach role in the Big Bash League is very exciting for me. This is a club with a fantastic history and a winning culture. I am eager to strengthen the foundations that have been built over many seasons. Having worked closely with the men’s team, I have seen the talent and potential within this group of players.”
Mott also expressed regret about not being able to continue as the head coach of the women’s Big Bash League team. He said, “However, the time spent with the women’s team has been incredibly special for me. I wish captain Ashleigh Gardner, all the players, and support staff the best of luck for the 12th season of the Women’s Big Bash League.”
