Indian Boxer Meenakshi Advances to Quarterfinals at Boxing World Cup

Guiyang, June 18: Indian boxer Meenakshi has secured her place in the quarterfinals of the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) taking place in Guiyang, China. The reigning world champion in the 48 kg category is competing in the 51 kg division for this event.

Meenakshi achieved a decisive 5-0 victory over Poland’s Natalia Kuzewska, earning her spot in the quarterfinals. On the fourth day of the tournament, Abhinash Jamwal (65 kg) was eliminated after losing 0-5 to Kyrgyzstan’s Mirzokhid Imamanzarov.

So far, five Indian boxers have reached the quarterfinals: Nikhil (55 kg), Deepak (70 kg), Meenakshi (51 kg), Prachi (57 kg), and Saneh (65 kg). Additionally, Jyoti (48 kg) and Jugnu (85 kg) have secured their medals by advancing to the semifinals.

Jyoti was a late addition to the Indian team, which was expanded from 18 to 20 members by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), including Akash in the 75 kg category. The Indian contingent consists of 10 male and 10 female boxers representing the country.

Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, stated, “Our primary responsibility is towards the athletes. International competitions play a crucial role in a boxer’s development. Every capable athlete should have the opportunity to test themselves against the world’s best. Jyoti and Akash have worked hard to earn this chance. It is essential for them to compete, gain valuable experience against top international opponents, and enhance their development at the highest level.”

On the fifth day of the event, four Indian boxers will compete in the quarterfinals. In the women’s category, Meenakshi (51 kg) will face Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova, Saneh (65 kg) will go up against Poland’s Kinga Krowka, and Prachi (57 kg) will battle Chinese Taipei’s Shih Yi Wu. In the men’s division, Nikhil (55 kg) will compete against Azerbaijan’s Amin Mammadzada.
