Bank Holiday Alert: When Are Banks Closed for Eid in 2026?

Mumbai, March 20: The confusion surrounding bank holidays for Eid in 2026 has largely been clarified. Customers are advised to check their state’s holiday schedule and complete essential banking tasks in advance.

Bank Holiday Alert: There has been significant uncertainty among bank customers regarding the dates for Eid-ul-Fitr in 2026. Since the date of Eid depends on the sighting of the moon, it can vary each year, leading to confusion about holidays. However, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has now released its holiday list, detailing when banks will be closed in March 2026.

On March 20, 2026, banks will be closed in certain regions for Eid-ul-Fitr (Ramadan) and Jumaat-ul-Wida (Goodbye Friday). Specifically, banking services will be affected primarily in Srinagar and some cities in Andhra Pradesh, meaning customers will not be able to conduct any branch-level transactions in these areas.

Where Will Banks Be Closed on March 21?

On March 21, 2026, banks will observe a holiday in most states across the country due to Eid-ul-Fitr. States where banks will be closed include Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Chandigarh, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Sikkim, among others.

The Moon Sighting Determines Eid Holidays

The date of Eid is determined by the sighting of the moon, known as ‘Chand Raat.’ If the moon is sighted on the evening of March 20, Eid will be celebrated on March 21, and banks will be closed that day. This is why there has been confusion among customers regarding the holiday schedule.

March: A Month of Festivals

March 2026 is packed with bank holidays due to several major festivals. Various holidays are observed for occasions such as Holi, Dhulandi, Dol Jatra, Yaosang, Chhapchar Koot, Shab-e-Qadr, Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, Telugu New Year, Navratri, Eid-ul-Fitr, Sri Ram Navami, and Mahavir Jayanti, leading to an extensive list of bank holidays across different states.

Customers are encouraged to plan their banking needs in advance to avoid any inconvenience. Despite bank branches being closed, digital banking services will remain operational. Customers can use UPI, mobile banking, and net banking to transfer funds, pay bills, and complete other essential transactions smoothly.
