Kabul, March 23: The Taliban has accused the Pakistani military of firing on civilians in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Paktika provinces, resulting in one death and another injury.
Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat stated that Pakistani forces shelled the Shnapat area of Narai district in Kunar around 9:30 AM local time. This attack led to the death of one individual and injured a woman.
Fitrat also reported that Pakistani troops opened fire on a civilian vehicle in the Shakin district of Paktika, although no injuries were reported in that incident.
In a post on the social media platform X, Fitrat wrote, βOn Sunday, the fourth day of Eid-ul-Fitr, at 9:30 AM, a mortar was fired by the Pakistani military regime in the Shnapat area of Narai district, Kunar province. This attack resulted in the death of a civilian and injured a woman. Similarly, the militia of the said regime fired upon a civilian vehicle in Shakin district, Paktika, but those in the vehicle remained safe with no casualties.β
These incidents occurred during a declared ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan for Eid. The Taliban has alleged that Pakistani forces have repeatedly violated this ceasefire, launching attacks in Kunar and Nuristan that resulted in civilian casualties.
On Friday, the chief of Afghanistan’s armed forces, Fasiuddin Fitrat, accused the Pakistani army of violating the ceasefire along the Durand Line.
According to a statement from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense, attacks by Pakistani forces in border areas have led to multiple fatalities. They described Pakistan’s ongoing assaults as indicative of a “lack of integrity and deceit.”
Ariana News reported that Afghanistan has refrained from retaliatory actions to prevent further deterioration of the situation, maintaining its commitment to the ceasefire. They warned that if such attacks continue, the “ceasefire will become meaningless,” and Pakistan will receive a decisive response.
On Wednesday, Afghanistan announced that it would halt its “Rad al-Zulm” defensive operations during Eid at the request of mediating countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey. Pakistan also declared a temporary halt to military operations for Eid.
