CPI Denies DMK Pressure Ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

Coimbatore, March 23: R. Mutharasan, a leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI), firmly rejected claims on Sunday that his party has reduced its seat demands in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections due to pressure from its ally, the DMK.

Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, the former state secretary of CPI emphasized that the alliance remains united and is guided by ideological unity rather than external pressure.

Mutharasan dismissed speculations about differences within the DMK-led coalition, clarifying that CPI will not yield to any outside influence during seat-sharing negotiations.

Highlighting the party’s independent political stance, he stated that the DMK is not the BJP, which exerts pressure, and CPI is not the AIADMK, which bends to such pressure.

He stressed that the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in Tamil Nadu has been sustained for over a decade because it is based on shared ideological commitments rather than short-term electoral calculations. According to him, discussions regarding seat allocation have not caused any discord within the alliance, as all partners are focused on broader political objectives.

Mutharasan remarked that the issue of seat distribution is not a priority for them. The key concern is to identify the real threats. He indicated that the alliance’s priority is to confront ideological opponents rather than engage in bargaining over constituencies.

He reiterated that CPI is unconcerned about contesting fewer or more seats.

The CPI leader also expressed concern over the growing influence of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), warning that its expansion poses a serious challenge not only to Tamil Nadu but to the entire country. He alleged that certain forces within the state are aiding this expansion, making it essential for like-minded parties to remain united.

Targeting the BJP-led central government, Mutharasan accused it of favoring BJP-ruled states while neglecting Tamil Nadu. He argued that such discriminatory practices undermine the spirit of federalism and national unity.
