New Delhi, April 8: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, staying fit can be challenging. However, incorporating some exercises and a balanced diet can help maintain fitness. One such yoga pose is ‘Bakasana.’ Initially, it may seem difficult, but with regular practice, it becomes easier. Practicing Bakasana strengthens the entire body and alleviates stress.
The term Bakasana is derived from two Sanskrit words. ‘Baka’ means ‘crane’ or ‘bird,’ and ‘asana’ means ‘to sit.’ Thus, its literal meaning is to sit like a crane. During this pose, the body resembles a crane, with the entire weight balanced on the wrists. The knees rest on the elbows or upper arms, while the hips are elevated. This is a balancing pose.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Bakasana (also known as Crow Pose or Crane Pose) is an essential balancing yoga asana that strengthens the arms, shoulders, and core muscles. It enhances mental concentration, self-confidence, and physical stability. Additionally, it tones the abdominal muscles, improves digestion, and helps reduce stress.
This pose is particularly beneficial for those with desk jobs or anyone who spends long hours sitting. Practicing Bakasana helps maintain a straight spine and increases flexibility. It strengthens the lower back and can alleviate issues like back pain. Furthermore, it reduces mental stress and anxiety. Deep breathing during Bakasana calms the mind, contributing to stress relief.
To perform Bakasana, start by squatting on your toes, keeping your heels off the ground. Place both palms on the floor in front of your feet, ensuring your fingers are spread wide for a strong grip. Gradually shift your body weight onto your hands and attempt to lift your feet off the ground. Rest your knees near your elbows and keep your heels close to your hips. Hold this position as steadily as possible while continuing to breathe deeply. Then, gently return to a normal stance.
If you experience pain in your knees or wrists, consult a doctor before starting. Pregnant women should avoid this pose without expert supervision.
