Ningbo, April 8: The opening day of the Badminton Asian Championship saw mixed results for Indian players. On Wednesday, two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu and H.S. Prannoy overcame tough first-round challenges, while Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth faced early exits.
Sindhu battled hard against Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching, narrowly securing victory in three games. After losing the first game 15-21, the Indian shuttler regrouped and took the second game 21-11.
The decisive game turned into a tense showdown, with the score tied at 19-19. Sindhu utilized her experience to clinch the last two points, winning the match in one hour and seven minutes. She will now face China’s Wang Zhi Yi in the second round.
Meanwhile, Prannoy defeated Nguyen Hai Dang in straight games, winning 24-22, 21-12 to advance. He saved multiple game points in the first game, securing a close win before dominating the second game.
In contrast, Lakshya Sen was eliminated by Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, losing in straight games 12-21, 19-21 after a 41-minute match.
In another match, Srikanth faced defeat against former world champion Loh Kean Yew from Singapore. He won the first game 21-18 but lost the next two, with Loh dominating the rallies to win 21-9 and 21-11.
The standout performance for India came from rising star Ayush Shetty, who defeated China’s world number 7, Li Shi Feng, in straight games to secure a spot in the pre-quarter finals. He will now compete against Taipei’s world number 20, Chi Yu Jen, for a place in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, in women’s singles, India faced disappointment as Malvika Bansod and Tanvi Sharma were eliminated in their respective matches.
