XChat vs WeChat: Can Elon Musk’s New App Challenge Chinas Messaging Giant?

Mumbai, April 14:

XChat, a new messaging application from X (formerly Twitter), is set to debut on April 17 on the Apple App Store. Initially, it will be available exclusively for iOS, while the Android version’s release date remains unannounced.

Under the guidance of Elon Musk, XChat aims to become the primary messaging platform within the X ecosystem. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to evolve X into a comprehensive “super app,” akin to China’s WeChat.

The app facilitates one-on-one chats, group discussions, and supports voice and video calls. Privacy is a significant focus, featuring end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, screenshot blocking, and message recall. Users can also edit and delete messages and create accounts without needing a phone number.

A notable highlight is the complete absence of advertisements, offering a cleaner user experience compared to other popular messaging platforms.

XChat has been in development since May 2025 and entered public beta in March 2026. Built using the Rust programming language, it benefits from X’s vast user base of over 500 million monthly active users.

Overall, XChat represents a crucial step in Musk’s vision to integrate messaging, payments, and various digital services into a single platform.
