Azerbaijan Summons Iranian Envoy After Drone Attack Injures Two

Baku, March 5: Azerbaijan has summoned the Iranian envoy following a drone attack near an airport and a school that left two individuals injured.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the attacks, stating, “One drone targeted the terminal building at the airport in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, while another drone fell near a school building in the village of Shakarabad.”

Azerbaijan has called for Iran to clarify the situation and take necessary steps to prevent future incidents. The ministry emphasized that these drone attacks violate international law.

Additionally, Azerbaijan has reserved the right to take retaliatory measures. The Iranian ambassador was summoned to express strong opposition to the incident.

The Iranian drone targeted an Azerbaijani airport near the shared border, marking the first time Tehran has aimed at a state in the Caucasus since the onset of the US-Israel conflict against Iran.

Azerbaijan has maintained a neutral stance in Middle Eastern conflicts, recently strengthening ties with Israel and the Trump administration while distancing itself from traditional ally Moscow in the Caucasus.

The absence of any US military bases in Azerbaijan suggests that Iran may escalate its attacks beyond targets directly linked to the American military.

Growing military cooperation between Baku and Israel has heightened tensions with Tehran. However, both neighbors have largely maintained practical relations. The majority of the population in both countries are Shia Muslims, and Iran is home to millions of Azerbaijanis, estimated to be between 15 to 20 million, many of whom reside in the northwestern provinces bordering Azerbaijan.
