Tehran, March 9: Iran has officially appointed its new Supreme Leader following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that Mojtaba Khamenei has taken on this significant role. The president described this appointment as the beginning of a “new era of dignity and strength” for the nation.
According to Al Jazeera, Pezeshkian welcomed the election of the new Supreme Leader by the Iranian Assembly of Experts. He emphasized that Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment marks the start of a “new era of dignity and strength” for Iran.
As reported by Fars News Agency, Pezeshkian stated, “This crucial election is evidence of the desire to strengthen national unity in the Islamic nation; a unity that has enabled Iran to respond effectively to the plots of its enemies.”
Mojtaba Khamenei is a significant figure within Iran’s security forces. He is believed to have managed a vast business network under the leadership of his father, Ayatollah Khamenei. Prior to the vote held on Sunday, he was considered a frontrunner by the Assembly of Experts, which consists of 88 clerics tasked with selecting the successor to Ali Khamenei.
A statement from the Assembly confirmed, “The Assembly of Experts has appointed Ayatollah Syed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran through a crucial vote.”
This position grants Mojtaba the authority to make final decisions on all matters within the Islamic Republic. At 56, he has long been regarded as a powerful figure in the country’s political and religious landscape. However, he has never held an elected office or campaigned publicly for leadership.
Mojtaba has worked closely with the late Supreme Leader’s inner circle for decades, yet he has largely remained out of the public eye. Throughout his father’s leadership, he was believed to wield significant influence behind the scenes, particularly within the Supreme Leader’s office and conservative political networks.
In the race to become Iran’s next Supreme Leader, several names emerged. However, discussions about Mojtaba intensified following Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death, even as other candidates were considered.
