Awami League Voices Concern Over Rising Violence Against Its Members in Bangladesh

Dhaka, May 20: The Awami League of Bangladesh expressed deep concern on Wednesday regarding the ongoing attacks on its leaders, activists, and their families in 2026. The party warned that if the international community remains silent, the country could descend into brutality and prolonged political violence.

The Awami League condemned a recent incident in the Ukhiya sub-district of Cox’s Bazar, where 55-year-old Sayeda Begum was killed while trying to save her 32-year-old son, SM Imran, from an alleged attack by activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). According to the party, the slogan “Joy Bangla” has now become a crime in the country. They stated that this “horrific tragedy” is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of violence across the nation.

The Awami League noted that no one associated with the party is safe, regardless of whether they have committed any crime. The number of attacks and murders in several districts is rising at an alarming rate.

The party stated, “Supporters of the current BNP-led government often justify violence as a natural response to the previous administration, while independent analysts and human rights groups view this as a dangerous shift.”

They added, “Political rivalry in Bangladesh is not new, but the way innocent people are treated these days is something different and entirely new.”

The party referenced the deaths of imprisoned political leaders, indicating a complete failure of state accountability. Attacks on arrested leaders in court and the police’s failure to provide security further highlight this failure.

The Awami League appealed to world leaders to speak out against these atrocities, warning that considering it a “domestic minor issue” would be a dangerous mistake. The party emphasized, “Human rights are for everyone; they do not disappear when a party is ousted from power.”
