ATS Arrests Engineering Student in Mumbai for Promoting Online Radicalization

Mumbai, March 5: The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a young man in Mumbai for allegedly engaging in online radical activities linked to banned terrorist organizations. The accused is charged with disseminating propaganda for these groups via social media and encrypted messaging platforms, aiming to inspire individuals towards extremism.

The arrested individual has been identified as Ayaan Sheikh, an engineering student. ATS received intelligence that certain individuals were promoting the ideologies of banned terrorist organizations online, attempting to influence youth. Based on this information, search operations were conducted in several areas of Mumbai, including Kurla, Govandi, and Shivaji Nagar. Two other young men are also under investigation, and they have been questioned by authorities.

The ATS has filed a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and has taken Sheikh into custody. During the investigation, several electronic devices, including a laptop and mobile phones, were seized for forensic analysis. Officials reported that the digital data retrieved from these devices contained a “digital roadmap,” indicating Sheikh’s alleged connections to banned organizations.

The investigation revealed that Sheikh was active on Telegram channels and other encrypted messaging platforms where extremist propaganda was shared. Authorities also discovered multiple audio and video clips linked to Masood Azhar, the head of Jaish-e-Mohammed, on the seized devices. Additionally, several chat records indicated attempts to recruit for terrorist organizations.

According to the ATS, Sheikh attempted to involve two close friends, also engineering students, in Telegram groups associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and ISIS. However, it was found that both friends were merely viewing the content shared by Sheikh and were not actively participating in any terrorist activities. The ATS has recorded their statements.

During questioning, Ayaan Sheikh reportedly provided information about foreign handlers and suspicious contacts linked to banned terrorist organizations. Investigators suspect that several foreign nationals and alleged associates are involved on these encrypted platforms, potentially playing a role in recruitment and network expansion.

The ATS is now examining Sheikh’s digital footprint and financial transactions to determine if any funding or logistical support was provided. Ayaan Sheikh is set to be presented in a special court in Mumbai on Friday, where the ATS will seek police custody for further questioning. Officials indicate that more arrests may follow based on the investigation’s findings.
