Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Achieves Milestone with 1,000 Organ and Tissue Donations

Ahmedabad, March 24: Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital has reached a remarkable milestone in the field of organ donation. The organ donation program, which began on December 27, 2020, has successfully recorded 1,000 organ and tissue donations in just five years and 87 days. This achievement has established the Civil Hospital as a leading institution for organ donation, not only in Gujarat but across the nation.

The historic 1,000th donation came from 60-year-old Rameshbhai Babubhai Tadvi, who was declared brain dead following an accident. Despite the tragic circumstances, his wife Nathiben and family made the heartfelt decision to donate his organs, setting a powerful example of humanity. Rameshbhai’s donation has provided a liver, two kidneys, and two eyes, offering new hope for patients in need.

Dr. Rakesh Joshi, the Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital, emphasized that organ donation is not merely a donation; it is a sacred journey of ‘life from life.’ To date, there have been a total of 1,000 donations, comprising 767 organs and 233 tissues, which have given new life to over 745 patients.

The success of the hospital is attributed to teamwork, transparency, and excellent coordination. This performance has been recognized at the national level, with the Civil Hospital receiving prestigious awards from NOTTO and ROTTO for outstanding performance in organ donation in 2022-23, including Best Organ Retrieval Center, Best Brain Dead Committee, and Best Transplant Coordinator.

On the completion of 74 organ donations, families of organ donors and the hospital team were honored by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel.

The statistics reveal a total of 232 brain dead donors and 86 deceased donors. So far, 427 kidneys, 206 livers, 192 eyes, 73 hearts, 41 skin grafts, 34 lungs, 19 pancreases, 6 hands, and 2 intestines have been donated. The majority of organ donors, 90, are aged between 41 and 60, while 44 young individuals aged 13 to 25 have also contributed.

The hospital has set several records, including Gujarat’s first hand donation, the first small intestine donation, three organ donations in one day, and six organ donations over six consecutive days.

Among the organ donors, 203 are from Gujarat, with donors also hailing from neighboring states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and even Nepal.

This achievement by Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital is not just a number; it is a living testament to humanity. In moments of grief, selfless decisions illuminate the lives of many families. According to Dr. Rakesh Joshi, increasing awareness and sensitivity in society will ensure that no patient loses their life due to a shortage of organs in the future.
