New Delhi, March 26: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Wednesday that the nomination review process for the 2026 assembly elections and by-elections has been completed. This marks a significant step as the candidate landscape in key states set to vote next month is now clearer.
According to the commission, elections will take place in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, with by-elections also scheduled in six states.
Voting in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry is set for April 9, with the deadline for nominations having been March 23. After the review, a total of 2,140 candidates remain in the fray across these three states and one Union Territory.
A press note from the commission stated that returning officers conducted the nomination review on March 24, covering all electoral states and Union Territories, as well as the by-elections. To ensure transparency during this process, videography was carried out in the presence of candidates and their authorized representatives.
Breaking it down by state, Kerala has the highest number of candidates, with 985 vying for 140 seats. Assam follows with 789 candidates contesting for 126 seats, while Puducherry has 366 candidates for its 30-member assembly.
In the by-elections, a total of 66 candidates are competing across five assembly seats. Karnataka has the highest number with 50 candidates contesting for two seats, followed by Goa with three, Nagaland with seven, and Tripura with six candidates.
The commission has prepared a list of valid candidates as per the established procedure, which has been displayed on notice boards, along with photographs for voter convenience.
However, the final picture of the electoral contest will only be clear after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations at 3 PM on March 26. The commission emphasized that all processes have been conducted with full transparency and fairness.
