Kolkata, March 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its third list of candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections on Wednesday, which includes the mother of a victim from the RG Kar case, contesting from Panihati. This announcement has sparked a wave of political commentary. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh responded to the situation in a video statement.
Ghosh acknowledged the mother’s candidacy, expressing respect and sympathy for her. However, he criticized her for losing her own dignity in the process. He condemned the crime committed against the victim and noted that the Kolkata police apprehended the perpetrator within 24 hours. The victim’s parents had requested a CBI investigation, which subsequently took place.
He stated that the CBI validated the Kolkata police’s findings. The trial court, High Court, and Supreme Court monitored and approved the investigation. Despite this, the victim’s parents were not satisfied with the CBI’s inquiry. Ghosh questioned the CBI’s independence, suggesting it operates under BJP’s influence, now that the victim’s mother is a BJP candidate.
He highlighted that the victim’s parents attempted to meet with the President, Prime Minister, and Home Minister but were denied even a minute of their time, leading to their humiliation. Ghosh accused the mother of politicizing her daughter’s tragic death while seeking justice as a BJP candidate. He demanded an explanation for her alignment with the same CBI she once opposed.
The BJP’s Central Election Committee announced candidates for 19 seats in West Bengal, covering various districts including Cooch Behar South, Rajganj, Islampur, Hematabad, English Bazar, Shantipur, Panihati, Howrah Madhya, Uttarpara, Singur, Chandannagar, Chuchura, Haripal, Tamluk, Medinipur, Purba Medinipur South, Katwa, Santhia, and Nalhati.
