BJP Files Complaint Against Mamata Banerjee for MCC Violations

Kolkata, March 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The party accuses her of significant violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) currently in effect in the state.

In the complaint, a copy of which is available, the BJP highlighted that according to Chapter 9, Clauses 9.3 and 9.4 of the MCC, political leaders, including the Chief Minister and ministers, are prohibited from displaying hoardings and photographs in public places at government expense after the MCC comes into force. However, a picture of the Chief Minister remains displayed near the famous Kalighat Kali Temple, adjacent to the Kalighat Skywalk project, which is a state government initiative.

The letter sent by the West Bengal BJP unit to the Chief Election Officer (CEO) emphasized that Mamata Banerjee is not only the current Chief Minister but also the leader of the Trinamool Congress and a candidate from the 159 Bhawanipur constituency. Kalighat falls entirely within the geographical limits of this electoral area.

The complaint also pointed out that the ongoing display of her images as Chief Minister is a clear violation of both the MCC and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The BJP has requested the Election Commission to issue immediate orders for the removal of all such hoardings, banners, and images, including the one at the Kalighat Skywalk on Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road in Kolkata, and to take necessary legal action against the offenders.

As of the filing of this report, there has been no response from the West Bengal government or the ruling Trinamool Congress regarding this matter. Previously, the Chief Minister addressed three consecutive rallies in North Bengal ahead of the two-phase assembly elections scheduled for next month.

During one rally, she accused the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in the state of acting in favor of the BJP. She stated that every vote against the BJP would be a vote against the Election Commission, which has caused inconvenience to the public through special intensive revisions. While she expressed respect for the CAPF, she noted that they appeared to be acting as agents for the BJP and were even carrying BJP flags.
