New Delhi, March 26: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has intensified diplomatic efforts to end the Iran conflict by appointing a special envoy on Wednesday. This envoy will assist in advancing peace talks and mediation.
Guterres expressed hope that despite the differences among the parties involved, “there will surely be a way to end this terrible war.” However, the diplomatic landscape for resolving this conflict, now in its fourth week, remains unclear.
U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that discussions with Iran are ongoing and progress is being made. However, Tehran has denied any such negotiations, with the Iranian military stating that the U.S. is “talking to itself.”
Reports indicate that Washington has sent a 15-point proposal through third parties. Additionally, Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Vitkoff, and Jared Kushner may also participate in the talks.
Meanwhile, Israel has continued its attacks on Iran, while Iran has retaliated by targeting certain bases in Gulf countries. The U.S. is preparing to send paratroopers to strengthen its military presence in the region.
Guterres warned that “the world stands on the brink of a major war, an escalating humanitarian crisis, and global economic shocks.” However, he also noted that several mediators are active and peace efforts are ongoing.
The UN chief stated that his special envoy, Jean Arnauld, will work directly on the ground to facilitate peace and mediation efforts by engaging with all parties.
Guterres highlighted that this conflict is creating a severe crisis for civilians at the regional level and is also impacting the global economy, particularly harming less developed countries.
In a message to the U.S. and Israel, he emphasized that “the time has come to end the war,” while appealing to Iran to cease attacks on neighboring countries that are not part of this conflict.
He urged all parties to choose diplomacy over escalating tensions and to respect international law.
