London High Court Rejects Nirav Modis Plea for Rehearing on Extradition

New Delhi, March 26: The London High Court has dismissed Nirav Modi’s request to reopen proceedings against his extradition order issued by UK courts. This decision was made by the High Court of Justice, King’s Bench Division, on Wednesday.

During the proceedings, the Crown Prosecution Service’s lawyer presented a compelling argument, supported by a dedicated team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), including investigators who traveled specifically to London for the hearing. The plea for a rehearing was based on the ‘Bhandari judgment.’ However, thanks to the CBI’s persistent and coordinated efforts, this challenge was effectively managed. The High Court remarked that the circumstances surrounding the rehearing request were not extraordinary enough to warrant reopening the case.

The CBI is seeking Nirav Modi’s extradition in connection with a major financial scam involving a public sector bank (the PNB scam), with legal proceedings ongoing since 2018. After his arrest in the UK in 2019, courts approved Modi’s extradition and dismissed his previous appeals, finding no legal impediments to the extradition and accepting assurances regarding his treatment in India. Although there was a temporary legal hurdle that delayed the process, it was resolved in August 2025.

Nirav Modi filed a plea to reopen his appeal, expressing concerns about potential mistreatment, based on the ‘Bhandari judgment,’ and questioned whether the assurances provided by Indian authorities were sufficient to protect his rights. He has been incarcerated in the UK since March 19, 2019.

Nirav Modi is considered a ‘fugitive economic offender,’ wanted by the CBI in a bank fraud case in India, where he allegedly defrauded Punjab National Bank (PNB) of ₹6,498.20 crores.
