Assams Tezpur Lychee Gains International Demand, Says CM Sarma

Guwahati, June 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has flagged off a shipment of 500 kilograms of Tezpur lychee, which has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, destined for Singapore. This initiative marks another step towards promoting the state’s agricultural products in international markets. Sarma emphasized that the lychee produced in the Tezpur region of Assam is recognized for its quality and taste, both nationally and internationally.

The Chief Minister noted that the GI tag has helped establish a distinct identity for Tezpur lychee. He mentioned that the demand for this lychee is rapidly increasing not only in India but also in global markets.

Recently, through the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), 1,000 kilograms of Tezpur lychee were exported to Dubai. Now, a new shipment of 500 kilograms is being sent to Singapore, showcasing the global acceptance of Assam’s horticultural products.

Sarma indicated that there has been an increased demand for more lychee from Singapore; however, due to limited current production, it is not feasible to supply large quantities immediately. He pointed out that there is also significant demand for the GI-tagged lychee within Assam, which limits the availability for export.

The Chief Minister stated that the state government is working on better planning to enhance production and export capacity in the future. He expressed confidence that in the coming years, Assam will export a greater variety of horticultural products, which will increase farmers’ incomes and strengthen the state’s economy.

Sarma reiterated that the government is making continuous efforts to connect Assam’s agricultural products with global markets, bringing new opportunities to the agricultural sector and benefiting farmers.
