Assam MLA Bhupen Borah Advocates Strict Measures Against Helmetless Riding

Guwahati, June 3: Bhupen Borah, the BJP MLA from the Behpuria assembly constituency, has urged the Assam government and police to take stringent action against riders without helmets. This appeal follows a series of fatal road accidents involving youth in his area. Proposed measures include imposing fines and seizing motorcycles for up to a month.

Speaking to reporters, MLA Borah expressed concern over the rising number of fatalities from motorcycle accidents. He noted that several families in the Tikira area of his constituency have recently suffered losses.

Borah stated that three young individuals from the region have lost their lives in motorcycle accidents, while another is currently battling for survival in critical condition.

He highlighted that the recurring accidents have caused deep concern among local residents, many of whom belong to economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to the MLA, the deaths from accidents often lead to significant expenses related to traditional rituals and customs of the missing community, adding further financial strain on grieving families.

Borah mentioned that local BJP workers are attempting to assist affected families but emphasized the need for stricter preventive measures to avert such incidents in the future.

He suggested that Assam should consider implementing speed limits specifically for motorcycle riders aged 19 to 25. Drawing comparisons with speed regulations for commercial vehicles, he argued that similar restrictions could help reduce reckless driving among youth.

Borah also announced plans to discuss strengthening enforcement of traffic regulations with the police administration in Behpuria.

He insisted that hefty fines should be imposed on motorcycle riders without helmets. In addition to the current penalties, he proposed granting police stations the authority to seize such motorcycles for one month.

Borah questioned how young riders continue to roam freely on the roads without helmets, despite ongoing awareness campaigns and legal provisions.

He further asserted that strict enforcement and public discipline are crucial to preventing further loss of life and property on Assam’s roads.

His comments come amid growing concerns over road safety and the increasing number of fatalities associated with two-wheeler vehicles across the state.
