Assam Election Counting: Three-Tier Security Measures in Place

Guwahati, May 3: The counting of votes for the Assam Assembly elections is scheduled for Monday. Ahead of this, extensive security and administrative preparations have been completed across the state. Strict monitoring is being enforced at strong rooms and counting centers to ensure a peaceful and transparent counting process.

Officials reported on Sunday that a three-tier security system has been implemented at several counting centers. Special security arrangements have also been made in Lakhimpur district, where electronic voting machines from five assembly constituencies are being closely monitored at the Lakhimpur Government Higher Secondary School.

Lakhimpur’s Deputy Commissioner, Aditya Vikram Yadav, stated that all necessary preparations for the counting process have been finalized. According to the schedule, the counting of postal ballots will commence at 8 AM, followed by the counting of EVM votes starting at 8:30 AM.

To facilitate a smooth and timely counting process, 14 counting tables have been set up at each designated center in the district. In Upper Assam’s Sivasagar district, the administration has deployed 391 staff members for the counting of votes in the Demow, Sivasagar, and Nazira assembly constituencies.

Separate halls and special arrangements have been made for counting postal ballots to ensure full compliance with election commission regulations. Additionally, the district administration has increased security around counting centers and strong rooms in other districts as well. Senior officials have been reviewing preparations throughout the day.

In some sensitive areas, restrictions have been imposed to maintain peace and control movement around counting centers.

The assembly elections held on April 9 are considered politically significant for both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Congress-led coalition.

The NDA is attempting to form the government for the third consecutive time in the 126-member Assam Assembly, while Congress and its allied parties claim to have formed a broad opposition coalition to mount a strong challenge.

Political activities have intensified a day before the counting, with candidates, party leaders, and supporters closely monitoring the situation in their respective constituencies.

Security agencies have been instructed to remain alert even after the results are announced to prevent any untoward incidents. Many exit polls released after voting have shown the NDA in a leading position, with several surveys predicting a comfortable majority for the BJP-led alliance.

However, opposition parties have dismissed these predictions, asserting that the final results will be in their favor.
