Assam Chief Minister Claims Congress Has Lost Its Ground in the State

Guwahati, April 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sharply criticized the Congress party on Wednesday, asserting that it has lost its organizational base in the state. He believes the party’s chances of electoral success in the upcoming assembly elections are minimal.

While addressing journalists during an election campaign in Tongla, Sarma stated that Congress has become a non-existent party in Assam. He emphasized that the party no longer has any support in the state and will struggle to achieve success in the elections.

Sarma highlighted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to receive strong grassroots support throughout Assam.

He also condemned Congress for mentioning renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in its election manifesto. Sarma described this move as highly objectionable, arguing that dragging a cultural figure into political debates reflects poor judgment and disrespects public sentiments.

Regarding the proposed visit of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi to Assam, Sarma expressed no concern about its political impact. He noted that Owaisi would only visit constituencies where the BJP is not strong, campaigning in areas where Congress still has some foothold. Sarma indicated that such actions would not affect the BJP’s electoral prospects.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a decisive mandate in the 2026 assembly elections. He attributed the support for the government to its development agenda and welfare schemes aimed at benefiting the public.

The upcoming Assam assembly elections are expected to see competition among multiple parties. The NDA, led by the BJP, aims for a third consecutive term, while Congress and other opposition parties are working to strengthen their positions.
