Guwahati, June 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged for collective efforts to eliminate child labor and ensure every child has access to education, safety, and development opportunities on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labor.
In a post on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma stated, “The future of our society lies in the hands of our children. On World Day Against Child Labor, let us all work together to ensure that those hands hold books, not burdens, and that every child has the opportunity to learn and progress.”
World Day Against Child Labor is observed annually on June 12. Its aim is to raise awareness about the plight of millions of children engaged in child labor and to promote efforts to end child exploitation globally.
Child rights activists and social organizations have long believed that quality education, social security measures, and strict enforcement of labor laws are crucial in combating child labor. Various government initiatives at both national and state levels have focused on improving school enrollment, reducing dropout rates, and assisting vulnerable families.
Assam has also launched several programs aimed at enhancing access to education and the welfare of children, particularly in rural areas and economically disadvantaged communities.
The Chief Minister’s message comes at a time when child welfare groups are calling for increased awareness and community participation to prevent child labor and ensure children receive their fundamental rights.
On Friday, various events were held across Assam to mark World Day Against Child Labor, where educational institutions, civil society organizations, and government agencies reaffirmed their commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for children.
