India Hosts 11th BRICS Energy Ministers Meeting in Gurugram

Gurugram, June 25: India is set to host the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers Meeting starting Thursday, under its BRICS presidency for 2026. Energy ministers and senior officials from all BRICS member nations will convene to advance collaboration on energy security, sustainability, and innovation.

The theme of India’s BRICS chairmanship in 2026 is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.” Within the energy track, India has adopted the theme “Energy for All,” demonstrating the collective commitment of BRICS countries to ensure global energy access.

The BRICS group currently includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Together, these nations represent nearly half of the world’s population and account for about 40% of global GDP.

The meeting comes at a critical time as countries worldwide grapple with challenges posed by climate change, technological shifts, and rising energy demand. They strive to balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability.

The priorities of the BRICS energy agenda align closely with India’s sustainable development path, focusing on enhancing energy security and access, strengthening grid resilience, diversifying supply sources, and increasing the share of clean energy in its energy mix to meet rising demand.

India’s presidency has structured the BRICS energy agenda around three main priorities: energy security and sustainability; access to energy and ownership; and technology and innovation.

As the world’s third-largest electricity producer and consumer, and one of the fastest-growing major economies, India views secure, affordable, and stable energy as foundational to its vision for a developed India by 2047.

This meeting will provide India with an opportunity to showcase its significant progress in building a sustainable and future-ready energy system. Over the past decade, India has increased its solar power capacity more than fifty-fold, installed over 60 million smart meters, and set an ambitious target of achieving 410 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032.

India has also implemented major reforms to strengthen its power transmission and distribution infrastructure. The country has expanded its national transmission network to facilitate large-scale integration of renewable energy and accelerated the development of green energy corridors.

Additionally, India has made significant advancements in the biofuel sector, including 20% ethanol blending and the recent rollout of E85 fuel, which consists of 80-85% ethanol.

Globally, India has emerged as a strong advocate for clean energy cooperation through new initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance. This has bolstered India’s role in promoting an inclusive and stable energy future.

As chair, India aims to advance the priorities of the Global South by promoting practical cooperation on energy security, robust supply chains, innovation, and sustainable development. In an increasingly uncertain global energy landscape, strong collaboration among BRICS countries is essential.

The statement indicated that the energy ministers’ meeting is expected to strengthen BRICS cooperation on energy security, innovation, and sustainable development, while also advancing practical collaboration towards a secure, affordable, sustainable, and future-ready energy system.
