Guwahati, August 30: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the Assam Cabinet has approved a substantial ₹50,000 crore package aimed at accelerating large-scale development projects. This initiative is designed to strengthen infrastructure and public services across the state.
The proposed investment will be funded through various sources, including the state’s own resources, assistance from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), and funds available under different central government schemes. The package is expected to encompass multiple sectors, with a focus on basic infrastructure, healthcare, education, connectivity, power supply, housing, and flood management.
According to the Chief Minister, a significant aspect of this program will be to enhance primary healthcare facilities and improve infrastructure in schools and anganwadi centers. The government will also initiate housing-related measures for tea garden workers, support student welfare initiatives, and develop facilities such as markets and hostels for women.
Given the frequent flooding in Assam, part of the proposed investment will be allocated to strengthen flood protection embankments. This initiative aims to improve the state’s preparedness and mitigate the impact of seasonal floods on communities and infrastructure. The government has identified road and electricity networks as key areas for investment, asserting that strengthening these networks will boost economic activities and improve access to essential services across the state.
This package will also contribute to the development of the state’s industrial infrastructure, with large investment projects aimed at promoting sustained economic growth in Assam.
In another significant decision related to healthcare, the Cabinet approved ₹600 crore for establishing a proton beam therapy facility at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). This facility is expected to enhance access to advanced cancer treatment and provide specialized medical care for patients from Assam and surrounding regions.
These latest Cabinet decisions come amid the state government’s efforts to coordinate extensive infrastructure investment with the expansion of welfare and essential public services. The government has presented this ₹50,000 crore package as a long-term development initiative, with expenditures planned across various sectors deemed critical for Assam’s infrastructure, human development, and economic growth.
