New Delhi, August 30: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has appealed to all sections of society to refrain from calling for bandhs or blockades to express their grievances. He emphasized that such actions can lead to unwanted violent incidents. Instead, he encouraged citizens to adopt more democratic forms of protest.
Before departing for New Delhi, CM Biren Singh stated on Sunday that both the Manipur government and the central government are committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Manipur. He noted that calling for a bandh would not achieve their goals and would only lead to further difficulties for the public.
He praised the role of a delegation of leaders from 14 civil society organizations (CSOs) and legislators who recently campaigned in New Delhi for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. He mentioned that their campaign had a positive impact in the capital.
Biren Singh pointed out that the most affected during bandhs are daily wage workers and students. Women selling vegetables face significant challenges, as they rely on daily sales for their livelihoods, and disruptions can cause severe hardships for their families.
He also highlighted the negative impact on students, as bandhs disrupt their normal academic environment. Stressing that students are the pillars of society’s future, he urged all stakeholders to avoid disrupting the academic calendar in the state.
The Chief Minister warned protesters against creating chaos by breaking the law. He mentioned that he is heading to New Delhi to meet with top central leaders and discuss various ongoing issues in the state.
Additionally, he announced that after more than three years, road transport services between Imphal, Dimapur, and Guwahati have resumed without any issues. The Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service will significantly ease the burden on low-income individuals who previously had to pay high airfare to travel from Imphal to Guwahati.
