Guwahati, August 13: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Thursday that the relationship between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh extends far beyond their inter-state boundaries. He emphasized that both governments are committed to resolving remaining border disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding.
In a post on the social media platform X, CM Sarma highlighted the close ties that have existed between the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for generations. He described the relationship as being based on love, affection, and mutual respect.
Sarma remarked, “The bond between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh transcends borders. For generations, our people have lived like siblings, sharing love, affection, and mutual respect.”
He noted significant progress in resolving the long-standing border disputes between these neighboring states in recent years. Most differences have been addressed through dialogue and friendship between the two governments.
“Only 52 villages remain in dispute, and both governments will continue discussions in this spirit to completely resolve the issues,” he added.
The Chief Minister urged people living on both sides of the inter-state border to maintain peace and harmony, stressing that the dispute should not affect the traditionally close relationships between the people of both states.
“I appeal to the people of Assam and Arunachal to uphold peace and harmony. While borders may define our states, they can never divide our hearts,” Sarma stated.
The Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border dispute is one of the long-standing inter-state border issues in the Northeast. However, both states have intensified efforts to resolve differences through institutional mechanisms and dialogue in recent years.
The governments believe that finding solutions through dialogue, rather than confrontation, is essential to ensure lasting peace in border areas and to maintain social and cultural ties between communities on both sides of the border.
CM Sarma’s recent statements clarify the Assam government’s priority of emphasizing dialogue to resolve remaining contentious issues. He also urged residents of border districts to avoid activities or statements that could disrupt the atmosphere of peace.
This appeal comes at a time when both neighboring states are continuing discussions to reach a comprehensive and mutually agreeable resolution to their border disputes.
