Toronto, August 13: The Canadian Open will feature a thrilling women’s singles final between Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina. Swiatek secured her spot by defeating Elina Svitolina, while Rybakina triumphed over Coco Gauff.
In the first semifinal, Iga Swiatek overcame Elina Svitolina with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. This victory marked Swiatek’s first win against Svitolina in three encounters and earned her a place in her 14th WTA 1000 final.
Due to rain delays, Swiatek took to the court an hour later than scheduled. After saving some break points in the opening game, she gained control, winning the first four games and breaking Svitolina in her first three service games.
Svitolina struggled to hold serve until she was down 5-2, managing to recover only one break. However, she showcased her aggressive play in the second set, refusing to rally with the Polish player and hitting powerful shots. She gained two breaks to establish a 5-0 lead, nearly achieving a bagel against Swiatek, but settled for a single game.
At the start of the third set, Svitolina took the lead and pressured Swiatek’s opening service game. Despite missing some break opportunities, she converted one in the fifth game to lead 3-2.
Just when it seemed the match was in Svitolina’s favor, she faltered. Swiatek capitalized on this lapse, breaking back and winning four consecutive games, including a love break, to secure her place in the final at 5-3.
In the other semifinal, Kazakhstan’s second-seeded Elena Rybakina defeated fourth-seeded American Coco Gauff with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the final.
