New Delhi, August 13: The death toll from the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday continues to rise. President Abelardo de la Espriella reported that 265 people have lost their lives, while 496 individuals remain unaccounted for.
According to a report from the Russian news agency TASS, the number of injured has reached 3,494, and the count of missing persons has increased to 496.
The president stated that this disaster has resulted in the complete destruction of 11,347 homes, with an additional 53,526 homes sustaining damage. Furthermore, 140 buildings have collapsed, and 179 health centers and medical institutions have suffered structural damage.
The earthquake occurred on August 10 near the town of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, leading to widespread devastation. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with officials working diligently to locate the missing individuals.
Leaders from around the world have expressed their condolences and support for the people of Colombia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged all possible assistance.
In a post on the social media platform X, President Ursula stated, “Search and rescue operations in Colombia are ongoing, and at this time, the European Union (EU) is providing every possible support to the country. We are allocating €2 million to assist those in the most affected areas.”
She added that following Colombia’s activation of the Civil Protection Mechanism, the EU is working to deliver aid tailored to local needs and align it with ground requirements. This reflects the spirit of European solidarity and cooperation.
