Rahul Gandhi Challenges High Court Order in Supreme Court Over Asset Investigation

New Delhi, August 13: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has approached the Supreme Court to contest an order from the Allahabad High Court. This order directed the CBI and ED to investigate allegations that he possesses assets beyond his known sources of income.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant will hear Gandhi’s petition on August 17. The Congress MP is challenging the High Court’s ruling, which stemmed from a complaint by Karnataka BJP worker Vignesh Shishir. Shishir accused Gandhi of holding disproportionate assets.

In its order issued in May, the Allahabad High Court stated that if complaints are received by the relevant agencies, the allegations should be investigated according to the law. The court also noted that the CBI and ED are free to take appropriate action within the legal framework.

During a hearing on July 20, the High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the affidavit submitted by the CBI, indicating that it did not adequately follow the court’s previous directives. The bench also acknowledged the steps taken by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), stating that if actionable information arises during verification or investigation, the agency may proceed according to the law.

In addition to the CBI and ED, the Allahabad High Court bench directed the Department of Personnel and Training, the Revenue Department, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and the Director of the Serious Fraud Investigation Office to respond to the petitioner’s allegations.

The court will also hear the challenge to its directives on August 20.
