Guwahati, June 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed a recent incident involving a transport aircraft in Jorhat, which was caused by a technical failure. During a press conference on Saturday, he stated that a detailed report on the incident is awaited before any conclusions can be drawn.
Sarma took a firm stance on the Aadhaar card issue, emphasizing efforts to prevent its misuse. He announced that 100% of the state’s population now possesses an Aadhaar card. However, he expressed concerns regarding the issuance of Aadhaar cards by the administration and is keen to identify any shortcomings in the process. “I want to make it clear that every individual in Assam has an Aadhaar card,” he stated.
He also mentioned a directive that prohibits the creation of Aadhaar cards for individuals aged 18 years or older. Only those under 18 will be issued Aadhaar cards. This decision aims to curb illegal citizenship in the state. “We are confident that we will see positive outcomes in the coming days,” he added.
For eligible individuals who genuinely require an Aadhaar card, Sarma explained that approval from the Deputy Commissioner is necessary before issuance. “Once permission is granted at the Deputy Commissioner level, there will be no issues in obtaining the card,” he assured.
Additionally, the Chief Minister commented on the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), noting that it is currently enforced in only two northeastern states. He indicated that it will be revoked soon, describing the situation as not a significant problem.
