Jaipur, April 25: In a significant breakthrough, police in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district have arrested a suspect in the murder of a woman, just 48 hours after the crime occurred. The incident was driven by the greed of a neighboring young man.
On the night of April 21, Hathudevi, aged 50, was sleeping alone in her home in Bire Ki Dhani. During this time, Hem Singh, a 22-year-old neighbor armed with an illegal firearm, entered her house and shot her in the head through the window. The bullet fragments caused fatal injuries, and she died on the spot.
Following the crime, the suspect panicked and failed to carry out a robbery. To disguise the murder as a theft, he stole a tractor parked outside and abandoned it about eight kilometers away. The next morning, on April 22, the victim’s husband, Amararam, returned from a wedding to find his wife’s lifeless body, leaving him in shock.
Upon receiving the information, police arrived at the scene. Given the seriousness of the case, Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shivhare inspected the site. A forensic team and a dog squad were called in to gather evidence, and special teams were formed to investigate the matter. During the investigation, Hem Singh pretended to assist the police while attempting to destroy evidence. He tried to erase footprints in the sand and the tractor’s tracks but could not evade the police’s scrutiny.
SP Abhishek Shivhare held a press conference to provide details about the incident, which took place in Bire Ki Dhani, approximately 100 kilometers from Jaisalmer. Following the report on April 22, police teams were formed to begin the investigation.
During the inquiry, Hem Singh emerged as a suspect. His location at the crime scene raised further doubts. After rigorous questioning, he confessed to the crime.
SP Shivhare revealed that Hem Singh is an alcoholic and heavily in debt. His intentions turned malicious after he noticed the victim’s husband, Amararam, had a substantial amount of money—valued between five to six lakh rupees—stored at home. There had also been previous disputes between Hem Singh and Amararam regarding the sale and purchase of cumin seeds.
To stage the robbery, Hem Singh had stolen the tractor, but he was apprehended based on mobile location data and technical evidence. Efforts are ongoing to recover the illegal weapon used in the crime.
